The oldest thana of the ten thanas of Rangamati district is Barkal. During British rule, in 1923 it was developed on the banks of the Karnaphuli River. The Barkal thana / upazila is surrounded by the biggest riverside river, Karnafuli, which is surrounded by large hills, jharnas and small rivers. There is a legend behind Barkat Nation that there was a very large stream of water in the Karnaphuli River. The noise of drinking water was heard to be far away. And hearing the sound of this water seemed like a big machine or call. As a result, the people living in this place named the place Barkal.
